Mastering Inversions & Backbends

It’s time to get upside down. Welcome to our new studio at Kallio!

This course is for practitioners looking to deepen their understanding of inversions and backbends. Through four specialized workshops, we will explore the alignment principles and strength-building techniques needed for a safe and sustainable practice. Whether you're new to these postures or refining your skills, each session will provide structured progressions, hands-on guidance, and recovery techniques to balance your practice.

Workshop 1: Headstands (Sirsasana) 15.3.

Learn the foundations of a stable and safe headstand, focusing on spinal neutrality, scapular positioning, and key supporting muscles. We'll break down mobility demands, arm variations, and when to avoid inversions, ensuring a balanced approach with recovery postures.

Workshop 2: Forearm Balances & Low Arm Balances (Pincha Mayurasana & Mayurasana) 29.3.

Deepen your understanding of shoulder mechanics, core engagement, and breath control in forearm-based inversions. Through prop-assisted drills and partner work, you'll refine your ability to enter, hold, and exit these poses safely and efficiently.

Workshop 3: Handstands (Bakasana & Adho Mukha Vrksasana) 12.4.

Explore the intricacies of hand balancing by refining your shoulder alignment, forearm activation, and core integration. This session will include static and dynamic variations, wall and partner-assisted techniques, and sequences to release post-practice tension.

Workshop 4: Backbends (Urdhva Dhanurasana) 26.4.

Unlock the full potential of backbends by first preparing and lengthening the front body in progressive stages. We'll address both physical and emotional aspects of opening up, ensuring proper support for the neck, lower back, and knees while practicing safe transitions and unwinding postures.

Through four focused workshops, you’ll deepen your understanding of alignment, strength, and mobility while working with headstands, forearm balances, handstands, and backbends. With guided progressions and recovery techniques, you’ll build confidence and find more ease in these challenging poses.

Meet our new teacher Lotta Kupiainen:

“I’m Lotta Kupiainen and I started yoga practises 1998. I’ve studied various forms of yoga in Finland, India, Brasil and England. I’ve instructed classes since 2006 (for instance ashtanga yoga, hatha yoga, yin yoga, vinyasa flow, different hot yogas, air yoga, restorative yoga, saunayoga, aroma yin and Deep Rest which has it’s origins in yoganidra). I’m interested in introspection and meditation, and have studied TRE (tension release exercise).

I have been instructing yoga in yoga schools and shalas, gyms, schools, corporations, homes and given private yoga classes.

I have MA in film directing (from Aalto University). I was instructing in Elixia for 15 years (2009-2024) and worked as their yoga Master Trainer for 5 years. During that time I instructed all of their yoga classes and about 35 other group exercise classes. There classes like Indoor Running, Cycling, strength, barre and pilates were close to my heart. 

I’ve also played football, done some acrobatics, snorkeled and climbed.

My family consists of my husband and our three sons.”
